From the Revell website:
Due to remarkable technical advances, above all in transmission technology, the Starfleet decided on a comprehensive modernisation program across the entire fleet in the year 2236. On this new type of ship, the current technical developments were taken into account, and components such as warp nacelles and the primary hull were implemented into the standard series as the ships were built. The development of the Constitution Class began in 2236; the commissioning of the first models, amongst them the 288.6 m long U.S.S. Enterprise, took place in 2245. The new Class, consisting of 13 spaceships, was developed specifically for scientific investigations and research in unknown areas of the Galaxy. Diverse scientific laboratories were located in the saucer section which turned the Enterprise into a mobile research platform. In spite of this, the heavy cruiser was well-armed, as it and its crew of 430 people were alone way outside the Federation space during the missions - and in addition, as part of the United Federation of Planets, they were obliged to protect its sphere of influence against aggressors. During the 5-year mission starting in 2265 under the command of Captain James T. Kirk and First Officer Spock from the planet Vulcan, the Enterprise therefore "explored strange new worlds", seeking out "new life and new civilizations", and boldly going "where no man has gone before". During this time they made many initial contacts, some involving armed conflict with alien species.

Cool. Thanks so much for the sharing. It would definitely help other fellow modelers out there that is/will be working on this kit. :)

Revell / Revell of Germany really outdid themselves with this kit of the iconic Starship. It is beautifully detailed with outstanding fit and detail from brand new precision molds. Unfortunately in saying they outdid themselves is a very literal statement as the model has "too much" detail as so many kits of the craft do. The casual fan and intermediate model builder may find it easy to get past, but died hard Trekkers will notice the ship has much too deeply engraved panel lines where there shouldn't even be any panel lines. Eyes roll at the dreaded "grid pattern" not only on the top of the saucer section but on the bottom as well where none ever existed on the studio filming models or "the real" vessel as it were. And yes there were very faint lines of this pattern drawn on the large studio model, but they could never be seen, nor were they intended to be seen on the television screen as they were literally drawn on with a carpenter pencil, string and a nail in order to align lettering, hull details and serve as an outline for the later "rusty" weathering area that went around much like the Forbidden Planet spacecraft. That being said, if one were to visit the existing model on display at the Smithsonian one would see these over exaggerated lines all over it since it's last enthusiastically over creative restoration which is woefully inaccurate and overdone. At the way pre-Star Wars time in which the enterprise was depicted in the mid 1960s, we had ourselves sleek sonically welded hulled starships, sporting a thermograycoat of reinforcing metallic paint with panels only depicted where they might be removed or interchangeable for some reason. However it is rare to find the ship not having some version of these lines at least on the top section, even in the original series where line graphics depicting the ship on the wall or a backlit display showed some form of it intending to display or suggest the field dispersion of either the sensors or deflectors, sub space antenna beneath the skin perhaps but not huge pie section chunks of the hull as if they'd forgotten to finish construction there while the rest of the ship was smooth. But it's a very attractive model, and almost irresistible and frankly I will eventually complete it probably keeping the panel lines somewhat after filling in much of it with an automotive filler primer. Sandpaper won't cut it in this baby, these lines are like the Grand Canyon.
