The BA-20 armored car was developed in 1934 to equip headquarters, reconnaissance and communications units. Its chassis originated from the civilian GAZ-M1 car, which was actually a Ford-designed vehicle produced under license in Nizhny Novgorod. The car was developed by the Gaz Automobile Plant in Nizhny Novgorod. The BA-20 has been in mass production since 1935. The chassis was made at the Nizhny Novgorod plant, the body was made at the Vaksinsky plant, and the final assembly of the BA-20 was also done there.
