The "D" variant was the ultimate version of the F-100 with 1,274 aircraft being produced. The production of the F-100 ended in August 1959. The F-100D arrived in Southeast Asia in 1962 with its primary mission being close air support and ground attack within South Vietnam. This role was eventually taken over by the A-7 Corsair II. The aircraft became affectionately known as “The Hun”, short for “one HUNdred”. The last F-100 left Vietnam in July 1971 but not before 242 of these aircraft was lost. The “Hun” was eventually replaced by the F-4 Phantom II and the F-105 Thunderchief.

On June 21, 1945 the 120th TRS was reconstituted and 11 months later re-designated 120th FS and assigned to the Colorado ANG. The 120th FS “Colorado Cougars” was stationed at Buckley Field, a section of Lowry AFB, Colorado and was awarded the history and honors as well as the Guidon (colors) of the former 120th TRS. In January 1961 the unit was once again re-designated, this time 120th TFS and in May 1968 went to Phan Rang AB, South Vietnam with their F-100Cs. When the 120th returned from Vietnam in April 1969 they re-equipped with the F-100D variant which they flew until April 1974 when the converted to the LTV A-7D.
