In 1967 the U.S. became aware of the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat. This made it necessary to develop a new aircraft to counter the MiG-25. The USAF rejected the USN F-14 Tomcat and issued its own requirements. The solution came in the form of the McDonnell-Douglas (now Boeing) F-15 Eagle. The F-15A made its inaugural flight in July 1972 and in January 1976 the first Eagle entered service. The "E" entered service in 1989. The F-15 was the first dedicated USAF air superiority fighter since the F-86 Sabre.

McDonnell Douglas F-15D 86-0181 was built as c/n 990/DO61. June 1, 1943 saw the activation of the 390th FS/366th FG, eventually becoming the 390th FS/366th FW and calling Mountain Home AFB, Idaho home in 1982 until 2010. Since 1965 the 390th FS “Wild Boars”, “Blue Boars” while in Vietnam, have flown F-4’s, F-111’s and in 1992 received F-15C/D which they continued to fly until 2010 when they moved to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. The 390th FS have taken part in WWII, Vietnam, “Operation Just Cause” and “Operation Desert Storm”.
