The F-16 Fighting Falcon was produced by General Dynamics who became Lockheed who then 
merged with Martin Marietta to become Lockheed Martin. The F-16 entered service in January 
1979 as a multi-role jet fighter that evolved into an all-weather multi-role aircraft capable of 
maintain so the U.S. and 25 other countries added it to their inventory. The Fighting Falcon is 
referred to by its pilots as the “Viper” and will remain in USAF service until 2025.


The 555th TFS story began in November 1942 as the 555th Bombardment Squadron, Medium. In 
November 1945 the squadron was de-activated and re-activated in January 1964. From 1965 
until 1973 the 555th flew F-4s in Vietnam and shot down 39 MiGs, earning them the motto 
"World's Largest Distributor of MiG Parts". The 555th returned to the U.S. in 1974 and in 1994 
transitioned to the F-16 when transferred to the Aviano Air Base in Italy. F-16 89-2016 was 
delivered to the military on July 1990.
