Astro Boy is one of the most iconic animation characters in Japan, as well as one of the most successful creations by Tezuka Osamu, the Godfather of Japanese manga.
In the original story, Dr. Tenma lost his son, Tobio, in a traffic accident. Devastated, he created Astro Boy as a substitute for his late son and loved him as his own. Astro Boy has Tobio’s heart in his body and is a robot with human intelligence and emotions.
Astro Boy possesses seven superpowers, human intelligence, and is capable of emotions. He is the pioneer leading the future world to restore the balance between humans and robots.
Caravango.store spent a lot of effort curating this crossover project. Both Tezuka Productions and Jason Freeny were skeptical about the crossover concept at first: while Astro Boy may possess human qualities, including a human heart, human intelligence and emotions, he is still a complete robot. Both parties initially worried that this collaborative concept may not fit the original storyline, and may destroy Astro Boy’s image as treasured by his fans.
Nevertheless, Tezuka Productions and Jason Freeny had much respect for each other and were hopeful to accomplish this project. After Caravango.store coordinated with both parties, in partnership with Mighty Jaxx who specializes in premium art collectibles, various conceptual directions were explored and a plan was finalized in the end which retained Astro Boy’s robotic origins while demonstrating Jason Freeny’s surreal creativity at the same time.
Jason Freeny’s interpretation is a future version of Astro Boy: with the advancement in technology, Astro Boy’s robotic structures were rebuilt to make him more human-like; while the new design kept Astro Boy’s superpowers, he is revealed to be structurally, intelligently and emotionally more like a human being. This concept was then brought to life along with Mighty Jaxx’s amazing design team, who also produced XXRAY Plus: Astro Boy as a premium limited edition art collectible.
With this crossover project, Tezuka Productions, Jason Freeny, Mighty Jaxx, and Caravango.store hopes to present a new, updated version of Astro Boy, perfected for his fans!
